Introduction

In the high-growth payments sector, companies often focus exclusively on their technical stack while neglecting their most important infrastructure: their people. At Paymend, we are a remote-first team, but we refuse to be a "remote-only" organization. We believe that high-performance infrastructure requires high-bandwidth human connection.

This March, we brought the entire Paymend team to Rio de Janeiro. This wasn’t just a retreat, it was an investment in our collective momentum. For our partners and future hires, this is a look at how a week in Brazil solidified our “Mission First” mindset and why the calibre of this team is our greatest competitive advantage.

Why the offsite is a critical business tool

A team offsite isn't a vacation, it’s a deliberate pivot from daily execution to long-term connection. For Paymend, it matters because it replaces digital transactionalism with human trust. In an environment where we value fearless innovation and momentum, being in the same room allows us to challenge ideas directly and support each other instantly. It’s about moving from being a collection of high-performers to a bonded unit that delivers.

From digital avatars to the copacabana

We chose Rio de Janeiro for its vibrant energy, a perfect match for a team that is highly motivated, fast-moving, and driven by a shared passion for payments and what we are building. Basing ourselves on the iconic sands of the Copacabana, we found the perfect mix of world-class lifestyle and focused business energy. From the historic streets of Downtown Rio to the coast, the trip was a powerful reminder that our mission is global, and we have the right team in place to deliver it.

The challenge: beating the "digital silo"

The biggest hurdle for any remote-first company is maintaining that shared sense of urgency and connection across different time zones. While we were productive, we realized that to truly move with total conviction at scale, our team needed to see each other’s expertise firsthand. We wanted to ensure that every team member felt the weight and value of the collective mission beyond their specific screen.

The solution: a week of high-intensity gelling

We designed a week in Rio that balanced high-level strategy with genuine human connection (and a lot of fun!):

  • Strategic alignment: A full day of quarterly planning and team presentations where the calibre of the talent in the room truly stood out. This wasn't just about reviewing the past, it was about synchronizing our vision for the future, ensuring every department is perfectly aligned for the aggressive growth targets we’ve set for the quarter and year ahead.
  • Shared perspective: Standing together at the foot of Christ the Redeemer, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and looking out from Sugarloaf Mountain provided a new meaning to shared perspective, and the kind of "big picture" thinking we bring to our products every day.
  • Connection through adventure: We took to the water, exploring Ilha Grande and the stunning Angra coastline by boat. Navigating the coastline and jumping into the Atlantic together moved us beyond our Slack avatars and our virtual office on Gather into a space of genuine friendship and mutual respect. We focused on building the rapport that makes remote work seamless.

The result: a new benchmark for momentum

The impact of the week was immediate. We didn't just return with photos, we returned with a new gear of productivity and a massive motivation for what’s to come.

  • Total alignment: Every team member is now locked into our Q2 growth strategy with total conviction.
  • Unmatched caliber: Seeing the expertise of the team in person confirmed that we have the right people in the right seats.
  • Lasting bonds: We left Rio feeling super bonded, with a huge respect for what everyone does and a shared excitement for our future growth.

Key takeaways for the road

  • Brilliance is better together: We hire brilliant people in a remote-first team, but the real power comes when those people are in the same room.
  • Ownership is a force multiplier: When every person is fully invested in the outcome, the whole company moves faster.
  • Human connection matters: Remote work is for execution but in-person is for building the trust that makes that execution possible.

The Paymend Rio offsite was a defining moment for our culture. We’ve returned to our home offices across the globe with a clearer vision and a deeper bond than ever before. We aren’t just building a payments company, we’re building a high-caliber payments team that actually enjoys the journey together.
